100 deaths per week from construction related ill health
New health and safety guidance has been published by the Construction Industry Advisory Committee (ConIAC) Health Risks Working Group, to encourage better management of occupational health risks.
Figures for the HSE have revealed that 100 people per week die from construction related ill health in the UK and the construction workers are 100 times more likely to die from an occupational disease than they are from an accident. Less than half of all construction workers stay employed in the sector until they are 60.
ConIAC believes that these figures result partly from confusion about what "occupational health" means for the construction sector.
The guidance provides a definition of occupational ill health as "all health problems in the work environment", including health problems workers bring to the workplace from their daily lives as well as health issues that are caused for made worse by work.
But it stresses the helping workers tackles lifestyle risks to their health is not a substitute for managing workplace health risks.
What does MI do to try and help our customers?
We would recommend taking advantage of our free of charge services, two are as follows:
Face Fit Testing -
Where RPE is used, it must be able to provide adequate protection for individual wearers. RPE can't protect the wearer if it leaks. A major cause of leaks is poor fit – tight-fitting facepieces need to fit the wearer’s face to be effective.
As people come in all sorts of shapes and sizes it is unlikely that one particular type or size of RPE facepiece will fit everyone. Fit testing will ensure that the equipment selected is suitable for the wearer.
MI can come on your site, and conduct free of charge face fit testing for your employees, we can also offer "train the trainer" so your staff can be able to provide face fitting on site.
Skincare Audits -
Hands in an industrial environment are vital tools to get the job done.
From vehicle maintenance & repair workshops, body & paint shops through to fast fit centres and vehicle breakdown services, employees in an automotive environment are exposed to a wide variety of soilings, potential irritants, temperature swings and, at times, exposed working conditions. This can lead to visible skin problems ranging from red, sore, chapped skin through to serious instances of occupational dermatitis.
We can provide easy to understand education and training materials to raise skin care awareness and encourage appropriate use and compliance. This combines with ongoing technical support to provide help and advice in relation to the use of Deb products and an auditing programme to help implement standards and drive compliance.
Pre and Post audits are carried out to help establish and maintain the effectiveness of the Skin Care scheme.
MI will provide these audits completely free of charge without obligation.
